Breathing is a fundamental action that we often take for granted, leading us to underestimate its potential in managing anxiety. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) can severely affect daily life, with studies showing that approximately 32% of individuals with GAD experience severe impairment and about 45% face moderate impairment. Learning and practicing breathing exercises can be an effective tool that can keep high levels of anxiety at bay.

What is Mindful Breathing?

Mindful breathing involves paying attention to your breath without judgment. It's about being fully present in the moment, focusing on the sensation of each inhale and exhale. This practice can anchor you to the here and now, soothing anxiety and stress.

How To Practice

  • Start by finding a comfortable seated position.

  • Place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly.

  • Inhale deeply through your nose, feeling your belly rise, then exhale slowly through your mouth, feeling it fall.

  • Repeat this for several breaths, letting each one relax you.

  • Inhale quietly through your nose for a count of 4.

  • Hold your breath for a count of 7.

  • Exhale audibly through your mouth for a count of 8.

  • This technique can be a powerful tool to calm your nervous system.

  • Inhale for a count of 4.

  • Hold your breath for 4 counts.

  • Exhale for 4 counts.

  • Hold your breath for another 4 counts.

  • Repeat this square breath pattern for several rounds.

When you practice mindful breathing regularly, you develop greater emotional resilience and the ability to manage challenging situations with ease.

Benefits

By focusing on the breath, you can redirect your attention away from stressors, promoting relaxation and clarity.

Set aside a few minutes each day to breathe consciously, whether in the morning to start your day, on a calm note, or in the evening to unwind before bed.

Remember, mindfulness is a journey, and your practice will evolve over time.

It is common to feel unsure when trying something new- Be patient with yourself and embrace each breath as an opportunity to find peace within.
